Coenzyme Q10 therapy in current clinical practice

چکیده
Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is a naturally occurring essential compound found in virtually every cell of the human body. CoQ10 is also known as ubiquinone because of its quinone structure and ubiquitous presence in nature. 1 It is a lipid soluble substance which is found in cell membranes and is well known for its primary role as an intermediate of the electron transport chain localized in mitochondrial membranes and is vital for aerobic cellular respiration. 2 Adequate amounts of CoQ10 are essential for ATP production and cellular respiration. CoQ10 also acts as an intercellular antioxidant and is present in blood, cell membranes low density lipoproteins and high density lipoproteins. 1 CoQ10 protects proteins, DNA and membrane lipids. 3 CoQ10 is structurally similar to vitamin K, but still it is not considered a vitamin because it is the synthesized de novo in the body. 1 The first aromatic precursor in the CoQ10 biosynthesis is parahydroxybenzoic acid from the amino acid tyrosine and constitutes its quinoid ring structure. The tail is consist of 10 isoprenoid units which is derived from the mevalonate pathway. 1

Evaluation of the therapeutic effect of coenzyme Q10 in patients with generalized vitiligo
Background: Vitiligo is a skin autoimmune disease that affects 0.1% to more than 8% of people in the world. About 50% of patients develop the disease before the age of 20. In this disease, melanocytes are destroyed in the skin, mucous membranes and retina. As a result, white spots appear on different parts of the body. Studies have suggested the role of oxidative stress in vitiligo. Coenzyme Q1...
متن کاملCoenzyme Q10 Insufficiency Contributes in Duration and Frequency of Seizures in Epileptic Patients
Purpose: Oxidative stress has recently emerged as a possible mechanism in pathogenesis of epilepsy. Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is a strong endogenous antioxidant that protects cells from lipid oxidation and reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, however, the impact of CoQ10 on seizure characteristics in epileptic patients is not clear. Methods: The current study enrolled patients with the epilept...

Background: Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is a hereditary autosomal recessive genetic disorder that can affect many organs including the lungs and the digestive system. We aimed to assess the effects of coenzyme Q10 level on clinical parameters in cystic fibrosis patients. Materials and Methods This cross-sectional study was performed on 40 patients (13 females and 19 males) with cystic fibrosis who wer...

متن کاملEffects of Coenzyme Q10 on the ratio of TH1/TH2 in Experimental Autoimmune Encephalomyelitis Model of Multiple Sclerosis in C57BL/6
Background: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is known as a progressive central nervous system inflammatory disease. Certain factors, such as interleukins, inflammatory cells, and oxidative stress are supposed to involve in MS etiology. Because of the important role of oxidative stress, antioxidant therapy for MS has received more attention. Although coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) acts as an antioxidant, there is ...
